A Guide to setting up a Fighter fish in a bowl

Setting up a betta fish bowl can be a rewarding experience! Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you create a comfortable and healthy environment for your betta fish:

1. Choose the Right Bowl

  • Size: Aim for at least a 5 liter bowl. Smaller bowls can lead to poor water quality.
  • Shape: Round bowls can be difficult for bettas to navigate. A rectangular or square shape is preferable.

2. Gather Supplies

  • Bowl: Ensure it's made of glass or clear plastic.
  • Substrate: Use gravel or sand; rinse it thoroughly before adding it to the bowl.
  • Water Conditioner: To treat tap water and add Aquarium salts
  • Heater: Bettas thrive in water between 24°C - 28°C.
  • Filter: A gentle filter is ideal to avoid strong currents.
  • Decorations: Provide hiding spots (like silk plants or caves) and avoid sharp edges.

3. Rinse Everything

  • Rinse the bowl, substrate, decorations, and any equipment with water (no soap) to remove dust and residues.

4. Set Up the Bowl

  1. Add Substrate: Layer about 1-2 Cm of substrate at the bottom.
  2. Place Decorations: Arrange plants and hiding spots.
  3. Install Filter: Position it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  4. Set Up Heater: Place it so it doesn’t touch the substrate, and follow the instructions to set the desired temperature.

5. Add Water

  • Fill the bowl with dechlorinated water. Use a water conditioner to treat tap water.

6. Cycle the Bowl (Optional but Recommended)

  • Cycling: If you want to establish beneficial bacteria, consider cycling the tank. This can take 1 week but creates a healthier environment.
  • Fishless Cycle: Use ammonia or special cycling products to promote bacteria growth without fish.

7. Test Water Parameters

  • Use a water test kit to ensure pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels are safe for bettas (pH: 6.5 - 7.5, ammonia/nitrite: 0, nitrate: <20 ppm).

8. Acclimate Your Betta

  • When the water parameters are stable, introduce your betta. Use the floating method:
    • Float the Bag: Place the sealed bag with the betta in the bowl for about 10-15 minutes to equalize temperatures.
    • Mix Water: Gradually add some bowl water into the bag to help the fish adjust to the new water conditions over another 10-15 minutes.
    • Release the Fish: Gently place the betta in the bowl using a net to avoid adding bag water.

9. Monitor and Maintain

  • Daily: Check for signs of stress or illness.
  • Weekly: Change 20-30% of the water and clean the substrate.
  • Regularly: Test water parameters to ensure a healthy environment.

10. Enjoy Your Betta!

  • Watch your betta acclimate to its new home and enjoy observing its behavior!

Following these steps will help ensure your betta fish has a healthy and vibrant environment to thrive in.
